The Civil Rights Heritage Pack is a survey of the brave men and women who risked their reputations, livelihoods, and often even their very lives to press towards what they knew to be right. Their brave determination changed the course of America’s story and showed that when the ideals of our Founding Fathers are extended to all, America the Beautiful is not just a dream. The lessons guide children through a comprehensive study of the important issues of the time and how they were confronted head-on. Much like today, not everyone agreed on the path to equality, but in the words of cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Through the use of stories, songs, biographies, and picture books framed by a comprehensive history of the movement’s defining moments, children will discover not only the work of the notable leaders but also how children participated in the struggle.
Target grades: 4th – 6th grade (with extension for 7th and 8th grade). These lessons can easily extend down to younger siblings who are ready for the material because it includes many picture books, but the appropriate age for these conversations varies by family. Not all of them are fully scheduled in the guide, but nine additional book recommendations are made for middle school students wishing to use this guide.
Lessons scheduled: 36 weekly lessons. Though designed for a single school year, these robust lessons could easily be stretched out to cover multiple years if you include the optional readings or choose to read both core book option. And many of the lessons stand alone, so some can be removed if you prefer to move through the lessons more quickly.
What’s included:
- A list of recommended titles with book summaries and integrated at-a-glance lesson plans
- Lesson-by-lesson suggested page breakdowns and plans that combine books for a cohesive program
- Two core books to choose from for longer, more robust lessons or shorter, less involved lessons – both fully scheduled
- Two optional books scheduled for advanced or older students – can be assigned in addition to full study or in place of the picture book portion of the study.
- Seven additional unscheduled book recommendations for advanced or older students
- A recommended bonus book not shown here and 26 free video suggestions that bring the stories to life with real imagery
- Five movie/film recommendations available on Amazon Prime that can be used for afternoon time or family movie nights
- Access to a digital page with pictures and direct links to purchase all of the books along with future updates to broken links, book updates/replacements, and other notes to enhance your experience, as needed.
The Civil Rights Heritage Pack includes these great titles along with another core book, a bonus book recommendation, books for advanced and older students, and over sixteen picture books to offer an in-depth look at key crusaders for equality and peace in America and the work they gifted to us all. I love how this could be adapted for different age groups, it has lots of flexibility. Can’t wait to get started, it looks amazing. Thank you for putting it together!
Holy cow, this is powerful! The video links alone are worth the price of admission. I’m in tears previewing this for my kids right now. Just – WOW. Excellent resource. Great books (I’m not upset that I was missing a couple from the list so of course I have to go get them now 😉 ). I don’t know if we will use all the books, but what a time saver to have them to choose from or to use as free reads. Grateful for this wonderful resource!
Using with my high schoolers, very well done, appreciate Amber’s passion for her work. Couldn’t rate her work any higher,,,, stellar!!!! Keep up the great work, I look forward to your continued efforts!
