Sweet Tea & Cookies Multicultural Enrichment Guide

by | May 9, 2021 | Homeschool

Sweet Tea & Cookies is a multicultural family celebration of the American South. But it’s not about state flags, birds, flowers, and capital cities. Rather, this guide digs deeply into the soul of the South.

You’ll hear from all kinds of people because the story of the American South is wrapped up and intermingled with a little bit of this and a little bit of that. There are contributions that have been made by Indigenous peoples, Black folks, white folks, and others who have come together to leave their stamp on this part of our country.

This enrichment guide includes multicultural stories of family, food, music, art, activism, love, tragedy, hope, resilience, fear, celebration, and fun! The South is complicated. But tucked between all the worn creases of its past are things that bind us together and make us smile.

Target grades: 1st – 6th grade. This guide was made with a family of mixed ages in mind, so younger siblings can certainly participate, and older students will enjoy the journey as well!

What’s included (Check out Sweet Tea & Cookies in the Heritage Mom Shop):

  • 70 beautifully designed pages of content to give your family a one-of-a-kind cultural experience
  • 25+ themed read-alouds along with links to recipes, poetry, music, handicrafts, videos, and more
  • Daily overviews with brief notes to help you know what to expect and how to introduce the material to your children
  • Integrated at-a-glance scheduling grids for ease of use
  • Access to a digital pagewith pictures and direct links to view or purchase the books
  • An online spreadsheet of easy links for the entire guide, to be saved for quick access when using a printed version. Includes future updates to broken links, book updates/replacements, and other notes to enhance your experience, as needed.
  • Bonus! A full fifth week that can be added on, swapped out, or picked apart
  • ***FREE GIFT*** Upon purchase, you will also receive a digital set of coordinating recipe cards on which your family can capture favorite recipes or create a keepsake recipe box.

Lessons scheduled:  Designed for maximum flexibility, the days and weeks are interchangeable, so the resources can be used in a way that works for your family. Here are a few examples:

  • Follow the weekly schedule provided, as is, to experience every part of the program across four or five weeks.
  • Pick and choose what you’d like to pursue each week and leave the rest behind. The stories alone are well worth this “trip” through the South!
  • Have teatime once every week or so and spread the resources out across the entire school year or some other elongated period at home
  • Do one week this year, a different week next year, another the following year, and so on.
  • Use this as your morning time plan during a season when you’re looking to shake things up
  • Use the guide all year long for your homeschooling co-op, but please reach out to discuss group discounts if you plan to distribute the PDF to parents.

Sweet Tea & Cookies includes these great titles along with over 20 more books to offer an incredible journey through stories of real and imagined people who have left their mark on the American South as well as the notable natural environment that gives our southern states their unique look and feel. The images below contain affiliate links, so I may receive a small payment if you make a purchase, at no additional cost to you.

This looks really neat. Will there be an option that is already printed?

I’ve been getting a lot of requests for that, and I actually had a copy printed and bound this week and it is GORGEOUS, but I just can’t take on the responsibility of printing and shipping right now.
