Amazing Africa! Heritage Pack

by | Jun 25, 2020

The Amazing Africa! Heritage Pack is designed to introduce your child to the wonderful continent of Africa through high-level overviews of many countries combined with more in-depth “visits” using engaging living picture books. An early elementary novel and richly illustrated book about African traditions round out this pack by adding perspective and fun. Though children will learn a bit about most of Africa’s 54 countries, they will go deeper with over 15 countries, sometimes remaining on a single country for multiple weeks while examining different aspects of life in that land.

Target grades: 1st – 3rd grade. Younger siblings can certainly participate in these lessons, and older students will likely enjoy most of the picture books as well!

Lessons scheduled: 36 weekly lessons. Though designed for a single school year, these robust lessons could easily be stretched out to cover multiple years. And because each lesson is independent, you can skip books or eliminate weeks if you prefer to work through the plans more quickly.

What’s included:

  • A list of recommended titles with book summaries and integrated at-a-glance lesson plans
  • Lesson-by-lesson suggested page breakdowns and plans that combine books for a cohesive program
  • Two recommended bonus books not shown here and over 50 free video suggestions related to all of our country visits – just for fun!
  • Access to a digital page with pictures and direct links to purchase all of the books along with future updates to broken links, book updates/replacements, and other notes to enhance your experience, as needed.

The Amazing Africa! Heritage Pack includes these great titles and 30 more books to offer an incredible journey through stories of people from all over the continent. The list below contains affiliate links, so I may receive a small commission if you make a purchase, at no additional cost.

  • Well Done

Amazing Africa is a thoughtful product. It is evident that a lot of thought and work went into it. It is a complete resource that can be scaled to meet the needs of a kindergartener and also meet the needs of someone in higher grades. I like how visual and informative Amazing Africa is as it shows the diversity that Africa holds—diverse ethnicities, religions, languages, landscapes, histories, etc. I love the options to also draw the African continent and learn more about the people who live there through the videos provided. This is a work of love. Thank you. (I also received great customer service, which is always a plus.)

  • So thoughtful

Amber’s hard work putting together this curriculum cannot be understated. The books are fantastic, and the clarity behind the planning (an overview of Africa’s rich diversity, with “visits” to many specific countries) is such a gift to parent educators.

  • Amazing resource

We did this study 2 years ago and my kids lloved it. The books, both chapter and picture, were loved by all. They loved this program so much that my kids immediately requested to learn about all the other continents in the same way. After attempting to DIY Europe and Asia, I have to say I really appreciate the hard work Amber put into finding great books to go along with each country! Thank you! Thank you!

  • The Missing Piece

So grateful to have found Heritage Mom and this fantastic resource pack curated from the heart. I can’t wait to get to know Africa alongside my kiddo. Truly the missing piece in our homeschool. Thank you, Amber!

  • Truly Amazing Africa

I am totally impressed with this. The book selections. Are amazing. We read both chapter books and the picture books. The only things we have been adding foods from the country when possible.

  • We are over halfway complete with the Amazing Africa pack. I am so thankful for this resource. All your effort and time to ensuring WE have beautiful resources and mirrors for OUR children. I have laughed and cried alongside my children. Please continue your amazing work! If you ever consider making your own full CM curriculum I will be first in line!

  • An amazing resource

I am so very grateful for the Amazing Africa Heritage Pack. We were having some issues with heritage and identity being that we’re the only Black family in our community…

Immediately, I knew to go to Amber’s website . Boy, am I glad I did. The book list is amazing, but so are the other resources such as the YouTube video links. I’m happy to say that I’m learning along side my children. My kids are 6, 4, and 1 and they’re all enjoying the books and lessons. I purchased many of the books but I was also able to find some at the library.
The books that weren’t readily available, the library was more than willing to purchase for the community. What a blessing!

Thank you Amber for providing such a beautiful resource.

  • Excellent!

Another wonderful resource to add to our homeschool. Amber is a one stop shop for thoughtfully curated books and guides. This will make my life easier and will save me lots of time in planning!

  • Heritage Pack

I am so excited to get started on our Heritage A Youtube influencer inspired me to try this. I plan to purchase more from the site in the near future as I am a new homeschool mom. Thanks Amber!

  • Great Guide

Very helpful framework to help plan out a robust and diverse unit about many countries in Africa.

  • Happy to Find

I am so excited about using this Heritage pack on Amazing Africa. Thank you for organizing this important content.

  • Amazing Africa is AMAZING!

So much time and thought was put into how this study is laid out. I love the short explanations for each book. And the way that Amber has given a “heads up” if something should be pre-read. I was able to find a lot of the books from our library, and then substitute ones that were not available, to keep the cost low.

Cannot wait to implement this curriculum in term 3 of 2021:)

  • Works Very Well with Gen to Deut of SCM

This is an excellent resource. We are starting Genesis to Deuteronomy through Simply Charlotte Mason this year, and I am going to overlap a visit to the country through Amazing Africa! with the other history and geography lessons. A majority of the books are available at the library, and the others are very affordable. I’m looking forward to doing each of the lessons!

  • Wonderful

My son and I are having a great time and learning so much as we read living books about each country in Africa, and fill in our map of the continent. Thank you, Amber, for doing the putting this all together and sharing it with us!

  • What a work of art here!

Yes! Yes, curriculum can be a form of artistic expression, and this pack is a work of art to be mesmerized by! I am so excited to add this piece into our curriculum, and incredibly thankful to Amber for the thought and work she has put in to creating this and making it available to others.

  • Incredibly Valuable + Important Resource

The ‘Amazing Africa Heritage Pack’ is an incredible resource. Amber has truly given us a gift with this gem. I have spent well over a year scouring the internet for racially aware and antiracist homeschool resources – striking out time and time again. But this pack is not only full of beautiful and rich literature lists and video links, it is also laid out in such a user-friendly and simple way. I cannot tell you how much we are enjoying this study and how thankful I am for Amber and her beautiful work. It has entirely pulled us out of the rut I was in with our homeschooling rhythm and given me a fresh vision and mission. Thank you, Amber!

  • Excellent

I am so glad I bought the Amazing Africa Heritage Pack. The booklist is wonderful and it is obvious that it was curated with a lot of thought, intention, and wisdom. I am awaiting a pile of used books from the list and am looking forward to jumping into it with my kids. Thank you so much, Amber.

  • Love this curriculum!

I so appreciate the excellent book list, the simple and easy to follow weekly grid, and just how thoughtfully this has been put together. Well worth the cost.

  • As a first time homeschooling mom I was very excited to use this curriculum. I loved that I was able to introduce a variety of new books to my children hoping to foster a greater understanding and appreciation for the many countries on the continent of Africa. The curriculum was laid out well and very easy to follow. The video recommendations were also an added bonus and were very helpful!

  • Thankful

As a white mom of two Black girls, I am so grateful for how these help me be a better mom and teacher to my girls!

  • Excellent

This is a great resource to add to our current world history curriculum. It’s not overwhelming while also providing great info and books about different countries in Africa! It is easy to follow and there several different optional books/videos that supplement the main books well!

  • Great resource

Excellent book list for those looking for focused resources on each country. I was able to get a lot of the books from my library. Would love to see discussion ideas added to this, to give some more input on where to focus our daily discussions for each country. Would definitely pay a premium if these were added to the content. For older kids, the topics could be extended or done over a shorter period of time, which is nice for versatility.

  • Happy in South Africa!

I am a customer who lives in South Africa, and I am over the moon to find this wonderfully comprehensive resource to help my kids (and me!) to understand better this continent we live on – Amazing Africa indeed! Thanks, Amber!

  • It truly is Amazing

I really love this curriculum. Amber has put so much thought and effort into this curriculum and I truly love it!

  • Making it simple

Trying to plan my school year and curriculum stresses me out. I chose Simply Charlotte Mason so that I could just use lesson plans, grab and go. I came to realize that their curriculum, while wonderful, isn’t as diverse as I could wish, but trying to fix that by myself would make me lose my mind. I was so grateful to have this ready to go book list (it’s basically a book list, with pages scheduled out over the school year) to save my sanity! (We’re starting with Amazing Africa to go with our Visits to Africa lessons. I’ll probably get the Schomburg and other packs when we study Modern/Early modern history.) I would be ecstatic if I could buy similar packs for other continents and cultures in the future.

  • Great resource

I’m really excited about spending the year learning about Africa and Amber has truly provided a wealth of information. The reason I gave 4 stars is because I thought there would be activity ideas or prompts for the lessons and there aren’t. Don’t get me wrong, Amber has certainly put lots of work into this and I’m excited to use this curriculum, I was just hoping there were activities included as well.

  • Love this!

As an AmblesIde Online user, I love how this guide blends seamlessly into our rhythm while adding much-needed diversity to the curriculum. I love the schedule and list of resources. It is so well-planned, and we are thrilled to begin using it! This adds so much joy and delight!

  • Exactly what I was hoping for

I’ve been trying to make my own curriculum for studying Africa, and when I saw Heritage Mom’s packs, I immediately purchased. I went through all of the Epcot countries with my daughter in the past year, prepping for a trip to Epcot that never happened due to covid. The only African country in Epcot is Morocco, which was disappointing to me as I really want to show my daughter the beauty of people all over the world. I’m thrilled to have this resource for my daughter this year. It’s easy to follow, and the perfect amount of information that I feel so confident will be absorbed well for her age.

  • Fantastic!

I purchased all three packs and will focus on the Amazing Africa pack this school year. I have been a fan of Heritage Mom blog for a couple of years and always refer to it when I can’t think of books for our home library or need some advice. When I saw these packs available, I was beyond excited and knew I would be purchasing all that are available. This is a testament to the content quality that Amber puts into this blog. I can’t wait for more packs to become available. I have been sharing the news since it was announced. My children and I will have rich dialogue because of these. And the book selections are FANTASTIC! I’m so pleased!

  • Exactly Perfect

This heritage pack offers a selection of books carefully organized with a “spine” and optional videos for every single country highlighted. Two of the more in-depth countries are of special consideration for our family – it’s as if this was written for us! I will be using this as part of a relaxed Year 0 plan with my children.

    A few things I appreciate:
-Each country in Africa is rightfully listed and treated as a separate country, not grouping Africa as one country. (I mean the book “Africa is not a Country” pretty clearly spells out the philosophy of this heritage pack!)
-The document itself is clear and well-designed with a good introduction, schedule, and book descriptions to help us choose what we will use.
-I find this to be very much inline with Miss Mason’s methodology and ideas, especially with the pacing of reading, the introduction of children of other lands, and the living and life-giving books chosen. While we will not be forcing narration as we are in the early years, I fully expect our kids will want to tell and share these stories and ideas.

  • Incredible resource

For over a year, I have been frequenting Amber’s blog for book ideas and her insights on raising African American children. After she shared the blog with many book ideas for studying Africa with young elementary kids, I started working through her suggestions (we loved them all!). I am a new homeschooling mom so this newest resource (the Amazing Africa! Heritage Pack) has been a game changer! She gives a description of each book, a week by week plan for reading through each country in the plan and videos to enhance the experience. I feel like Amber set us up for a full year of exploration and wonder as we learn about this incredible continent together. Not to mention the price of these packs for all the work she put into each thoughtful book/video is truly unbeatable. I am eagerly awaiting the release of more heritage packs (perhaps Native American, African American culture for younger elementary, artists/composers?). This resource gives me excitement and peace about beginning this year with my boys.

  • Timely Resource - Essential, Time Saving, Great Price!

This is a timely resource for our family. We were slowly grabbing titles mentioned in Amber’s post, “African and African-American Culture: Early Elementary Books”. This guide gave us specific direction for providing, as Amber mentioned, “extensive exposure to books that ground us in who we are and where we come from”. I like the beautiful graphics, clear organization, detailed book overviews, breadth in titles and pacing of the pack. What I most appreciate about this pack is how it’s structured. Amber provides a core book that centers our study, a reference book to expand on our studies and many aligned titles for us to enjoy, both novel and picture books. Oh, and videos! This approach to topical studies is new to me, but much appreciated. For topical studies moving forward, I want to use the method outlined in the Heritage Pack. But I know that’s gonna take much time to create. Therefore, I am pumped about the other packs she’s already made and those that are to come! I can only imagine how much effort and thoughtfulness went into creating this much-needed resource. When I imagine that my gratitude for this low-priced and time saving resource is multiplied. This is a pack for educational environments of all types. The pacing of the schedule is perfect for adding to the curriculum you have and a good start for those who want to add more cultural diversity in their classrooms.

  • Exactly what I was looking for!

I was attempting to construct my own homeschool lesson plans for a culture & geography trip to Africa, but then this Amazing Africa Heritage Pack was released! Amber has created the PERFECT guide and done all the work for me, covering 18 countries over 36 weeks. The annotated booklist is wonderful and the guide is so easy to follow and well organized. I am excited to dive in to the books and all the other resources shared in this Heritage Pack.

  • Game Changer Time Saver

I wanted to teach my children about the rich history and diversity of the nations of Africa, but I couldn’t find the right resources. At the library I found a few picture books, but mostly old overview books like we used for school reports before the internet. Nothing alive! On YouTube, I found few videos that were age appropriate for my children. There were videos by charities that focused on suffering. I found people vlogging their safari vacations. Now I have direction and structure. This Heritage pack is just what I needed. I can’t wait to dive in and learn along with my children.

  • Perfectly Scheduled

The “Amazing Africa” packet is just enough to add to my current homeschool curriculum for once a week lessons without being overwhelming or even having to take anything out of what I currently do. The schedule is detailed, including which books to read when and which pages. I am so thankful for all the work that went into this so that I can give my children a deeper appreciation for the peoples of Africa.

  • Great resource

I’m very excited to dive into “Amazing Africa!” with my child! I was so happy when I found this homeschooling package that I knew I had to buy it right away. I know the books and videos will help ME learn, so thank you! You are not only helping our children learn, you are helping us parents learn as well. I am very thankful for this resource!

  • Curated Goodness

I am grateful for Amber’s work of curating and annotating a list of engaging books about Africa. It’s especially nice to have the scheduling of the books done for me. It’s just the right amount of reading per week that it won’t feel overwhelming to add it as a supplement to our existing curriculum. The PDF is really well organized. I appreciate that the document is pretty and not just plain text as I might have expected.

  • Looks great!

This is laid out really well and it will be easy to follow. Can’t wait to start using it this fall!

  • I just purchased Amber’s “Amazing Africa” heritage pack and I am thankful for all the work she has put into these! I am going to be using her annotated book list as the perfect supplement to our AO curriculum this year. I also appreciate the links to videos she’s included which will help us “experience” the different countries and people groups in Africa!
