The Heart & Soul Heritage Pack is designed as a broad journey through the contributions and experiences of African Americans across the history of America. The lesson plans are grounded in Kadir Nelson’s stirring paintings and words that grace 100-plus pages of a gorgeous picture book whose story is told through the unique point of view and intimate voice of a one-hundred-year-old African-American female narrator. African American poets have often used words to express themselves during times of sadness and joy, and poems spanning across two hundred years of history are scheduled for each lesson so your child can connect with the ever-evolving body of Black poetry. Evocative historical moments and people are given more introspective study using additional living books to tell an inspirational story of hope and unwavering courage.
Target grades: 4th – 6th grade. This lesson guide can easily extend down to younger siblings or students who are ready for the material because it includes many picture books, but the appropriate age for these conversations varies by family.
Lessons scheduled: 36 weekly lessons. Though designed for a single school year, these robust lessons could easily be stretched out to cover multiple years. And many of the readings stand alone so some can be removed if you prefer to move through the lessons more quickly.

I am so happy I found this pack and very excited to start it with my kids this homeschool year. It’s an easy plan to follow and very doable. I will have no problem adding this to our schedule this year. Most of the books I found at our local library, but many of them I have bought used because I want them for our home library. More than I expected!
I love this pack! The readings are broken down into a 36 week format so I can easily plug it into our current flow. I really love that it has books for older students as well so I can use it with all my kids. Some of the books I have and love, but there is so many I haven’t even heard of before.

I am impressed with the amount of research that has gone into the Heart and Soul Heritage Pack. I am from Canada so I don’t know a ton about Black History in the United States. There is so much to dig into here and it is worth much more than the $12.95 to me that Amber has gone through all the work of compiling it.

Rich book selection
This is the unit study I have been waiting for! The books Heritage Mom selected are perfect for my girls (ages 9 and 10.5). We are already learning about people we have never heard of and I feel like my American History is being deepened alongside of my children. I HIGHLY recommend this pack. The lesson plans are clear and the linked videos are excellent.

There are different methods provided to study a topic (suggestions for picture books, videos, and poetry are a few examples) , making this pack easy to applied across different grades. I am so excited to use this curriculum with my Charlotte Mason Co-op Elementary Class. We have been spending several years covering the countries, cultures and geography of the world and this year we are covering the Americas. We will be spending a lot of time on the US since that is our country and I want to cover the many ethnicities that make up our nation. Heart and Soul is well laid out, easy to follow and not over-complicated, so it will lend itself well to our co-op setting.

This is a wonderful curriculum , we will be using it as part of our “knowledge basket”. Amber has taken the time and created a curriculum that gives a complete spin on teaching African American history with literature based learning. The book selection is brilliant and she has even gone as a far as embedding clickable links into the curriculum. 36 weeks of daily knowledge and discussions . This lesson guide is going to make my life easier! Now that I have purchased the Heart and Soul Heritage Pack I don’t have to spend time searching for books and videos in order to educate my children on African American History. This subject is so important to me, but oftentimes it is either not included or underrepresented in popular homeschool curriculums. I am relieved that I now have a cohesive and well thought out plan to follow for the upcoming school year!

this is exactly what I have been looking for! She lays out a sstudy plan to cover African American history, and the chapters to read, lined up with the American history timeline. She also gives an extensive booklist for additional resources. This is perfect!

I love that this is set up for 36 weeks of wonderful learning and the book list made it so easy to make sure we have everything ready to begin in August.
