Sweet Tea & Cookies Multicultural Enrichment Guide

by | Apr 6, 2021

Sweet Tea & Cookies is a multicultural family celebration of the American South. But it’s not about state flags, birds, flowers, and capital cities. Rather, this guide digs deeply into the soul of the South.

You’ll hear from all kinds of people because the story of the American South is wrapped up and intermingled with a little bit of this and a little bit of that. There are contributions that have been made by Indigenous peoples, Black folks, white folks, and others who have come together to leave their stamp on this part of our country.

This enrichment guide includes multicultural stories of family, food, music, art, activism, love, tragedy, hope, resilience, fear, celebration, and fun! The South is complicated. But tucked between all the worn creases of its past are things that bind us together and make us smile.

Target grades: 1st – 6th grade. This guide was made with a family of mixed ages in mind, so younger siblings can certainly participate, and older students will enjoy the journey as well!

What’s included:

  • 70 beautifully designed pages of content to give your family a one-of-a-kind cultural experience
  • 25+ themed read-alouds along with links to recipes, poetry, music, handicrafts, videos, and more
  • Daily overviews with brief notes to help you know what to expect and how to introduce the material to your children
  • Integrated at-a-glance scheduling grids for ease of use
  • Access to a digital page with pictures and direct links to view or purchase the books
  • An online spreadsheet of easy links for the entire guide, to be saved for quick access when using a printed version. Includes future updates to broken links, book updates/replacements, and other notes to enhance your experience, as needed.
  • Bonus! A full fifth week that can be added on, swapped out, or picked apart
  • ***FREE GIFT*** Upon purchase, you will also receive a digital set of coordinating recipe cards on which your family can capture favorite recipes or create a keepsake recipe box.

Lessons scheduled:  Designed for maximum flexibility, the days and weeks are interchangeable, so the resources can be used in a way that works for your family. Here are a few examples:

  • Follow the weekly schedule provided, as is, to experience every part of the program across four or five weeks.
  • Pick and choose what you’d like to pursue each week and leave the rest behind. The stories alone are well worth this “trip” through the South!
  • Have teatime once every week or so and spread the resources out across the entire school year or some other elongated period at home
  • Do one week this year, a different week next year, another the following year, and so on.
  • Use this as your morning time plan during a season when you’re looking to shake things up
  • Use the guide all year long for your homeschooling co-op, but please reach out to discuss group discounts if you plan to distribute the PDF to parents.

What if one of the links is broken? Occasionally, one of the resource links may change or a video may be taken down. When you encounter issues, check the link in the PDF that takes you to the online spreadsheet mentioned above. It says “Sweet Tea & Cookies Links” (page 8). That is where I post updated links and any other necessary updates for this study. If you check that page and the broken link has not been updated, please email me at heritagemomblog@gmail.com, and I will provide a replacement link to you via email and post it on the spreadsheet for others.

Sweet Tea & Cookies includes these great titles along with over 20 more books to offer an incredible journey through stories of real and imagined people who have left their mark on the American South as well as the notable natural environment that gives our southern states their unique look and feel. • Re-energizing Our Homeschool

I purchased this curriculum in late April of this year after sitting on the fence for awhile. I couldn’t be happier. It’s been everything I hoped and more! I’ve been homeschooling 10 years this coming fall and with four children ages 5-15, and ever-changing routines, things just felt increasingly stale. I was looking for something that would bring my whole family together and that I could be excited about diving into without a mountain of resources to sift through. Amber has done all the hard work, providing just enough to be engaging without overwhelming long library and “extra craft ideas” lists. We’ve been doing about one Unit/Week/Study per month, planning to use all four plus the bonus, May-September. Even my teenager is happy to join in when food is involved. And we’ve found ways to spill the joy outside of our family as well, inviting a friend in for the handicraft, inviting other friends for dinner, and sharing both books and baked items with elderly neighbors. My kids are asking–are we doing something like this for every region of the U.S.? I’ll be ready and waiting when those guides come out!

  • Just, WOW!

This is everything I hoped for! The only thing I’m sad about is that I found this at the end of summer. It would have added so much joy to our dog days of summer. I may just forgo our back to school curriculum for this!

  • Update

We are three days into this lovely resource and my kids have already started a blues band, had hard conversations about freedom schools and why they were needed, and talked deeply about how poetry can help us remember. This study is easy to use and really brings these states to life in a beautiful way. Thank you, Amber!

  • Excellent Resource!!!

I am so happy with this curriculum. I wanted something to help me developing an engaging morning time routine with my children this summer. I’m so excited to begin!

  • Sweet Tea & Cookies

Amazing resource filled with so much rich, wonderful literature. I cannot wait to dive into this material with my crew. My children love to explore history, read great literature, and prepare delicious meals in the kitchen. . .this combines all three. We’re going to use this resource to end the year and celebrate our growth. SO excited!

  • Excellent!

We have truly enjoyed this resource! We have discovered so many wonderful books, artists and musicians. The layout is organized and inviting. We’ve been using this to inspire our weekly poetry tea times, and it has been easy to adapt the suggested schedule to this format!

  • Summer learning

I loved doing this study with my children. It’s beautiful. We learned about so many musicians. My five year old became interested in Elvis Pressley and Elizabeth Cotten. We enjoyed many of the recipes . The books choices were wonderful. We dabbled throughout the summer, memorized poems, and wrapped up the study the first couple of weeks of back-to-school. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more of these lovely units.

  • It is difficult to not want to learn

when it is presented in such a charming and engaging manner. SO pretty, but so substantial in content.

  • Excellent Resource

This is the fourth resource that I have purchased from Amber at Heritage Mom Blog and, once again, I am delighted with my purchase. The materials are easy to follow, flexible to adapt to your schedule or needs, and beautiful to use. I will continue to use more Heritage Mom Blog resources.

  • So excited

We just moved to Georgia from Ohio and we are feeling lost. I am so excited to start this journey to learn more about our new surroundings. I especially love the focus on the amazing gems the south has to offer and not just the hard past that we often dwell on. While we truly miss Ohio, we are looking forward to falling in love with the south through Sweet Tea and Cookies!

  • Sweet Tea & Cookies

I completed the South Carolina week with my kids before going to visit family in SC. It was a great way to give them some understanding of the state and to make them feel more connected to the place I call home. Thank you!

  • My Daughter Is Looking Forward to Fall

I purchased “Sweet Tea and Cookies” for fall, and my 9 year old daughter and I previewed it. She told me several days later that she’s really looking forward to fall so that we can go through this material! She’s not the only one. I am using Amber’s beautiful curriculum as a part of a larger year of history around family and local history. The multi-dimensional aspect of the curriculum really appealed to me. Thank you, Amber, for your thoughtful and beautiful work.

  • Summer Tea Time is going to be So Peachy!!

What a valuable resource. Each guide is jam packed with resources and I love that she even included a shopping/check list for each week. It’s clear from the first page that Amber put so much care and consideration into every detail. Added bonus the graphics and layouts throughout the pack are so lovely, They are worthy of printing to have at the table as we work through the studies! Cannot wait to dive into these with my kids this summer!

  • Sweet Tea and Cookies

My gratitude to Amber for creating this enrichment guide is immeasurable. The poetry, songs, recipes, crafts and these wonderful stories and history provide a sensory rich experience that offers an abundance of opportunity for meaningful discussions and quality time with your children. We are working through the guide over our summer vacation. I hope Amber will continue to produce more bodies of work like it.

  • Best summer study ever!

I cannot believe how little I paid for this treasure!!! My kids and I are about to start an unforgettable experience of the south and I could not be more excited! Heritage Mom has the BEST booklists out there and I am eager to get the books. And we are going to enjoy the music, poetry, handicrafts and baking!!!

  • Sweet Tea and Cookies

I love this enrichment guide! The music, books, and crafts are so much fun! My son is excited about all of the recipes. It’s perfect for our summer plans!

  • Sweet Tea and Cookies

While we haven’t used this in our homeschool yet, I have taken the time to browse through and I’m very impressed with how well it is organized! There are so many ideas shared to help expand upon each daily lesson as well. I can’t wait to get started!

  • Sweet Tea and Cookies

This is such a beautiful PDF. It is thorough and well thought out. Amber has curated such meaningful selections and organized it so that it is easy for a busy parent to follow. I love the weekly grid that includes all the links we will need for the poetry and songs, crafts and recipes, etc. I am so thankful for the time Amber puts into creating all her resources and “Sweet Tea and Cookies” does not disappoint! It is the perfect addition to learn about the South.
