The Voices Heritage Pack highlights the stories of a range of Black leaders and events to provide a deeper understanding of how some of the lesser-known figures from history helped shape and enrich the cultural road map of African Americans. Studying the lives and contributions of these brave heroes and revolutionaries adds nuance and dimension to the story of Black America.
Woven into the lessons is the inspiring tale of Arturo Schomburg – a passionate man whose lasting legacy, Harlem’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, still opens its doors to those wishing to learn more about the people he knew had been left out of the history books. This Afro–Puerto Rican collected books, letters, music, and more to bring to light the achievements of people of African descent through the ages. By studying many of the people he taught others about, the Voices Heritage Pack helps us understand why this well-connected genius wanted to make his life’s work available to all.
Target grades: 4th – 6th grade. This lesson guide can easily extend down to younger siblings or students who are ready for the material because it includes many picture books, but the appropriate age for these conversations varies by family.
Lessons scheduled: 36 weekly lessons. Though designed for a single school year, these robust lessons could easily be stretched out to cover multiple years if you include all the optional readings. And many of the lessons stand alone so some can be removed if you prefer to move through the lessons more quickly.
What’s included:
- A list of recommended titles with book summaries and integrated at-a-glance lesson plans
- Lesson-by-lesson suggested page breakdowns and plans that combine books for a cohesive program
- A recommended bonus book and 20 free video suggestions that help bring the lessons to life
- Several alternate titles that can be chosen if your family has already read some of the selections, you are unable to purchase them (high price, out of print, budget, etc.), or cannot find titles in the library.
- Optional chapter books are scheduled in the plans for advanced students or older siblings
- Access to a digital page with pictures and direct links to purchase all of the books along with future updates to broken links, book updates/replacements, and other notes to enhance your experience, as needed.
Please note: One section of the Schomburg book discusses his interest in “Revolutionaries” or enslaved people who fought back. Some of the uprisings and people mentioned have been included in this lesson guide for further study with additional books and videos. The very nature of this topic – fighting back – necessitates discussion of rebellion. Violence is depicted as the stories are being told, and some pages may be disturbing for sensitive children. I feel the books do an excellent job of sharing this difficult material, but the topic may be disturbing for sensitive children.
The Voices Heritage Pack includes these great titles along with 10 more books (some are optional) that help children discover more about the people and history Arturo Schomburg worked tirelessly to uncover and make available to all. I am looking forward to utilizing this information.
I am really looking forward to exploring this curriculum and expanding our worldview! Already checked out some titles and started our journey 💓Thanks Heritagemom.com!
As a Afro-Latina I was very happy to see this curriculum highlighting Afro-Latino heritage. This really warms my heart. My son was very excited to see me prep this because it celebrates both of his ancestors. He was ready to dive deep into it as he recognized the Schomberg book as being apart of the curriculum. Thank you Amber for this curriculum it really highlights a part of history that doesn’t get celebrated often.
